Hello all,
I just finished a wine cellar and the cedar panneling that I made for it has a beautiful purple and chocolate swirly patter. I’m worried that it will fade over time. It’s in a cellar and doesn’t get any direct sunlight or much other light for that matter. Is there a way I should protect it or should I leave it raw and enjoy that cedar smell everytime I go for a bottle?
Just wondering

If you put any finish on that cedar it will kill the aroma and there's no need for a finish in a wine cellar -- unless it is exposed to moisture. If you're talking about eastern red/aromatic cedar, I would certainly leave it unfinished. If it's western cedar, there's a chance it will acquire a grayish cast in time if there's high humidity present (over 50% RH), but that's pretty high anyway. My favorite wine cellar material is Western Red Cedar -- unfinished. I can't swear you'll keep the color, but there's not much to affect it other than moisture and UV and you shouldn't have much of either in your wine cellar. In any case, it would take a long, long time to be a factor. Good luck.

I have some cedar panels in my basement for a future project. They don't get much light, but the purplish tones turned to reddish-brown after about 6 months. Still pretty, but not purple. I could be wrong, but I think its the oxygen not the UV, since they didn't "fade", just changed color. No reason to use cedar if you block off the smell.
