Looking to build some shoji screens,
Looking to build some shoji screens, that are to be used as room dividers, I plan to have them slide from top or bottom, have not decided which yet, has anybody build this before? Looking for advice on types of wood to use, size to build, size of rails-stiles, what material to use as a screen, where to purchase screen material from, types of slide mechanism?

Mark,
Most of the "tategu" (shoji and other interior millwork) over here in Japan I see is being made with Port Orford cedar. Easy to work with, light, and straight. Spruce is also used a lot.
I"ve never seen any hardwood used. This is probably because the finally fitting of shoji is done by planing to fit, somewhat easier with a softwood.
Paper you can get thru one of the japanese tool suppliers out there. It's usually glued on with rice glue (nori).
Slide hardware is not typically used. Doors slide in a wood track. Sometimes a thin vinyl strip is placed in the track to make the sliding action smoother and reduce wear on both parts.
Construction is a bit much to go into here. Check out the above book or see an early FWW. I don't have the number here offhand. I'll post it later.
If you are going to use machines, it's really a matter of setting up a table saw jig to cut ####lot of lap joints.
