Greetings All,
I am currently in the process of building Lon Schleining’s “Essential Workbench” from FWW167 – 2003/4 Tools and Shops Edition. I have milled all the base timbers from recycled redgum and was about to start laying out the 16 mortices when I discovered that neither the plan nor the text show their locations. The size of the mortises can be worked out from the tenon measurements which are described, but the mortise locations seem to be left up to the builder to estimate. I was about to proceed in doing this but having looked at the preview of the forthcoming Tools and Shops 2005/6, there is an article on building storage cabinets for this particular bench. I’m now in a quandary. If I estimate the location of the mortices and get it wrong, I will have to adjust the plans for the storage cabinets. If anyone has built this bench I’d be interested in knowing how the mortise locations were determined. Alternatively, if any one has an early copy of the 2005/6 Tools and Shops, the dimensions of the cabinets would allow me to calculate 8 of the mortices. Living in Australia, my copy will be a couple of months off and I’d rather not wait that long given that I’ve finally started to build the bench after 2 yrs on the back burners.
Regards,
Gordon.

GWW,
It appears hes built two boxes...22" front view for each...and 24 1/4" depth...height is 16". Hope that answers your question..or just ask..
The drawer depths are 22"

Will and BG,
From the information you have both supplied, I will be able to calculate the locations of all the mortises. I wont have to wait until late December for my next FWW Tools and Shops subscription to arrive. Very much appreciated.
Regards,
Gordon.
I received my new Tools and Shops issue yesterday. It has an article where he builds the cabinet for this bench with plans and measurements.
