I am just finshing making a cradle and I would like to be able to lock it in place so it does not swing when I do not want it to. I am looking for hardware that would allow a spring loaded locking mechanism rather than just a simple dowel (so it does not come out on its own). Any ideas on where I would find something like this.

Marine supply places will have a pin with a spring loaded ball in the end. It should fit through a hole in one piece into a metal hole (a brass plate ? ) in the other. The metal plate would be used siince wood would likely just conform to the ball over a bit of time. It's called a release pin at Jamestown distributors:
