I purchased a 7 1/2 Low Angle Jointer last year and while using it for the first time to surface the top of my new workbench I really wished that the mouth was a bit smaller. It’s not adjustable so I had to deal with it. Otherwise a very fine tool. A few months later I noticed that Lie-Nielsen had changed the design to include an adjustable mouth opening. I called Lie-Nielsen and asked if mine could be modified to the adjustable mouth style and was told that it was a different casting and there was not enough thickness in the old casting to remachine. Oh well!
A couple of months ago I was reading here about the great Lie-Nielsen customer service a Knot head had received and thought again that I would really like the adjustable mouth version and I was going to ask Lie-Nielsen if they could help. So I called and spoke to a lady named Sandy and she said “No problem, send yours in and we will exchange it for an adjustable mouth 7 1/2.” Wow, is that great or what! No charge even!. I did send it in and the new one arrived yesterday. I figured that they would remove my blade and adjusting mechanism and put it in the new body. Not so, I received a brand new, complete 7 1/2.
I was prepared to pay for the upgrade but was told that it would be gratis. They even paid for the return shipping. I can not imagine any company going farther out of their way to keep a customer 100% satisfied than this service. I have a few Veritas planes also, as well as 6 Lie-Nielsen but my first look in the future will go to Maine.
Thanks for a great American company.

Wing,
Great to hear that. I am awaiting delivery of my very first bench plane, the 4-1/2 from Lie-Nielsen. I ordered it online after midhingt on a Friday, and then thought of a question I wanted to ask them, so I sent it into their Contact Us. I received a reply Saturday morning, which, come to think of it, was the day before Easter. They must have some motivated employees there.
Best,
Bob
I'm sure you will love it! I have the 4 1/2 as well as a Veritas Bevel Up Smoother and they are both exceptional planes. They will cut great out of the box and with a little honing will be all you can ask them to be. The 4 1/2 is a wonderful smoothing plane.
