Hi!
I am looking into purchasing a lock miter router bit.
Lee Valley offers one for about $62 can.
I saw a Freud on at $144 can. Now thats quite a difference in price. In general you get what you pay for, however I am not into production woodworking, it;s just a hobby. Anybody have comments on the Lee Valley router bits vs, other brands???

Not sure about the Lee Valley bits, in particular, but you may want to look at Dimar. I assume from you quoting of Canadian prices you are above the 49th? I know that Dimar supplies some cutting tools to LV, so these may be the same.

At that price difference, I don't see how you can go wrong with the the LV bit. (Sure it is the same profile, size?)
I don't know if you have ever dealt with Lee Valley, but I have. I've not bought router bits, but in general, their quality is very good.
And their customer service is terrific. If you tried this bit, and for some reason you didn't like it, they will take it back -- maybe even if you use it for a year before deciding.
I have a Lee Valley chamfer bit, and it's done an excellent job. One thing about LV, if you don't like it, they'll listen!
PS: Nikkiwood made an excellent point about checking the size on the two bits. The larger lock miter bits are much more expensive, and you want to pick the right one for the stock you're using.

I use to buy Dimar router bits but found them pricey especially when the LV ones worked just fine for me. I truly believe you will be very satisfied with the LV bits and am quite sure they are made by Dimar.

I buy a goodly number of LV bits; they're quite good, and I'm quite certain you will find that bit perfectly acceptable. I do buy bits from other suppliers too, and I have a couple of brands I go to when I know what I need is a premium bit.
That price differential you see is normal, in my experience; in the eastern half of Canada, anyway, Freud (and Delta, which I very rarely buy), are always much more expensive than comparable bits....I'm usually pricing them against Dimar, Onsrud, and FS Tools.cabinetmaker/college woodworking instructor. I have a large number of LV bits also and have yet to have any problems with any of them. The milling is good and the cutting edges are ground at 600 grit which leaves a nice smooth cut.

Take a look at MLCS. I've been using their bits for years and have excellent luck with them. They're sharp and stay sharp, for less money and no shipping charges.

I recently asked LV about who made their router bits and the response was that they were made in Taiwan to exacting LV specs. I haven't bought any as yet but I do have a lot of faith in LV, they stand behind their offerings 100%.
