I’m making a desk and want to use leather for the center field This will be about 24″x54″. The border is 3/4″x3″ cherry. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this or know where I can find out more? I specifically would like to know; what the substrate should be (plywood, MDF other), how to bond the leather to the substrate, should the leather wrap around the edge of the substrate and if so are there tricks to do this, what grade of leather to use and any other suggestions.

Here is a very interesting site for leather desk tops.

I would use contact cement to adhere the leather to a piece of MDF. I would wrap it around the edges to the bottom and then drop the leather clad board into a recess in the desk top. I suppose that it's very much like dropping a router into a table.
