All,
I’m making a shaker drop-leaf table with splayed tapered legs. Today I finished fitting the mortice of the legs to the tennons on the apron pieces. The splay is 5 degree and therefore the aprons are also pitched 5 degrees.
I’m feeling a bit dense tonight. I need to cut the supports from the long aprons (1.5″x12.5″) for the drop-leaf. ..I was planning to do this on the TS by raising the blade up through the clamped apron..and finishing up with the hand saw. However, if I make a straight cut the supports will open on the same plane as the apron ie. 5 degree. I’m thinking I need to tilt the blade 5 degrees in the opposite direction to the splay so that the support will sit square and pivot parrallel to the table top. However, if I do this the screw will still be in the same plane as the apron, which will cause the support to all pitch at a 5 degree slope. Hope this makes sense. I think I’m missing something…

BG,
Yes, the cut for the leaf support will need to be parallel to the plane of the underside of the top. (So will the top edge of the aprons.) The screw (or pin, dowel, whatever) that forms the pivot point will need to be perpendicular to the cut you've made for the support.
Cheers,
Ray
Joinerswork,
Thanks. I just finished putting the bevel (5 degree)on the top of the legs and will cut the apron bevels next. After that I'll cut the supports. Kinda wish I could build 10 more of these to work out the kinks....
