I searched for topic that was up a few ago but couldn’t find it. But I know the topic of making wooden screws and nuts for benches somes up often. I think anyone interested in doing this check this out! WOW!
You could make all sorts of screws with it, and for those of you who can’t access ebay, it’s a 2 1/2″ wood tap.

This was my contribution on the subject a few years ago. The table saw would cut nice threads to mate with that tap.
Man that is one very cool set up you posted!
Hats off to ya !
Thanks but I can only take credit for posting. The idea and method belongs to my father. He apprenticed to a wagon maker in Denmark when he was 14. Now at 87 he is still as sharp as ever but moves a bit slower ;). He has always been able to create just what is needed to make something that would get the job done that would never have occurred to someone else.
I think the eBay seller is mistaken. The threads on his "tap" are solid all the way around, so there's no cutting action. My guess is that it's actually some sort of huge stop pin.
Ralph,
Looks to me, (if you enlarge the photo) like the beginning of the thread has at least one, or maybe two "steps" (cutting edges) cut in it, and hole(s) into the center, which I'd guess is counterbored (hollow) allowing for shavings to drop. But, it's not mine, so your guess may be as good as mine.
Ray
Many wood taps are solid all the way around. Heres a pictute of Grizzlys 1" tap.

Look at their site, it does have a cutting gap in the threads.
I missed the view of the other side!
I still think the piece on ebay may be a tap due to the square shank and the pilot appearing to be about the root diameter.

That is no tap, it is a worm gear from some machine.
If that is a tap, and it is difficult to see how it could be, from the picture, then "You could (NOT) make all kinds of screws with it" - because a tap is for making female threads as in inside threads eg nuts. To make screws you need a die....
Looks to me if someone is about to get screwed.....
Philip,
"To make screws you need a die....
Looks to me if someone is about to get screwed....."You know, Philip, if you keep introducing facts into these discussions, we will never get any good arguments going. Instead of making things more "real", why not just get in and throw some oil on the fire. That is the real spirit of Knots. :-)

Napie,
Haven't heard from you in a while. Thanks for writing. I agree with Mr. Adams.
As you know very well, woodworking has its factual side and its religious side. The two don't mix. And on the religious side, we have the normal folks and the fanatics. Watch out for the latter group.
Have fun.
