Hello,
Does anyone know which type of material should be used to make lamp shades? I am not talking about pre-made shades, but just the material itself.
Thanks,
David.

I used some botanical paper I purchased online to make shades for some wall sconces I made. Used 40 watt bulbs because after all it is paper. I did put some frosted plastic sheet material on the bulb side to help difuse the light. You can also get mica here http://woodworker.com/cgi-bin/fullpres.exe?PARTNUM=941-273&go=257&KEY=MICA
I took your original post to mean you wanted a fabric shade. I don't know what the right material is, but I know I have a lamp with the wrong material. It started out as a hunter green silky type material. I'm sure it was off the shelf at the fabric store. It has faded to an ugly pink color. I would suggest talking to an upholstery shop to see what they recommend.
Yeah, some kind of fabric or canvas. I have an old mid-century lamp at the office that has some kind of thick canvas, not fabric. I'm just not sure what I can safely use. And good point about the color change. Even if it doesn't burn, it's got to be stable as well.
