Anyone have anything to say about these? Are there better alternatives in the price range?
I’ve been accumulating lumber for the last few years, and I am almost ready to seriously consider contemplating eventually building a “serious” bench.
I’m not known for following good advice, but I have been told it’s best to have the vises and other hardware before building, and I thought, just maybe, I’ll try it that way, this time.
Thanks

I just built my bench and I got the same advice. I wanted to get a Record vise but only the ones made in China were available by the time I got around to it. I bought the large Jorgenson. In the mean time I saw a note on this forum by someone who was unhappy with the fit of the two faces of the vise. I looked at mine and it seemed to be true of it also. He sent his back. I kept mine. It is now on the bench and everything seems to be perfect. Perhaps sitting on the floor caused some distortion which disapears when hanging on the bench. I still find myself trying to open it by turning the handle, old habits die slowly. I have no complaints about it at all. I made the tail vise from the kit that Woodcraft sells. I used the directions from the chapter on the "Modern Hybrid" from the Workbench book by Scott Landis. These dirctions are from Tom Nelson. I hope this helps. Good luck.
TXJon,
I've been abusing my Jorgenson for about two years now with no complaints. Like you, I broke down and bought the vise before I built my bench....I really like the wooden handle and the face of the vise is imbedded in the bench top apron which provides a bit extra support
What's the deal with the Chinese Record vises? Are they using the same patterns and materials as the Records that used to come from England?
