Any feedback on the jointer/planer combo tools? I just got a promo on the 10 inch jet version and I was thinking that it could be a real space saver in the shop provided it did the job. ANy experience out there?

Thanks --- Link was helpful and I think I will go forward with the purchase. Space is a big issue for me.DanC
I would also consider the Hammer A3 31 jointer-planer. I have a Hammer B3 saw/shaper combo and I am very happy with it's performance and build quality. I think Austrian quality is much better than what is coming out of the far east. With the A3 31 you will get a higher HP motor (4 HP vs 3 HP) and self setting quick change knives. Also, the machine is about 200 pounds heavier. I will be more money that the Jet but Felder/Hammer is offering a stimulus package with special pricing and free shipping.
Check out the Nov/Dec FWW page 31 for the latest add.
Edit: I just realized that you were looking for a 10" combo. I have read that the 10" Jet is a light duty machine. If you plan to do woodworking for awhile I would skip the 10" machine and go the the 12".

Dan,
A 10" jointer would certainly be nice to have.

Dan,
I just happened to see the 10 inch Jet combo today. It's quite a small unit, very similar to a bench top planer but with a jointer on the top half.. The Jointer top is aluminum and short. I think it would be hard to joint anything of length on a bed that short, but then again, it's 10 inches wide!
The real machine is their 12-inch jointer planer model. This machine is built and functions similarly to the cool Euro jointer/planer combos.
Thanks for the imput. Now I don't know where to go. DanC
Hmmm... Maybe the Grizzly G0675? It looks pretty nice and has a cast iron table. But it is over a $1000. But I think that's reasonable for two usable machines in one.
Dan,
I own the Jet 10" combo. Really think hard about the kind of work you will be asking the machine to do. This small machine, while it is 10" wide, will not handle large timbers. By large I mean anything over about 6' long and really nothing physically too heavy. It will only take very light cuts. Taking 1/16" passes is as heavy as I will go with hardwoods and even then it's pushing it. The fence does not move left-right. It is stationary on the far right side of the jointer table.
I just completed a project in white oak. It will produce a fantastic surface when used inside certain parameters. The stock I milled was for 2 night stands and the pieces were all small to start with. I had no trouble getting good results. I would not, however, consider this a production machine in any way.
I use a shop vac for dust collection and it does an adequate job. The machine is VERY loud especially in planer mode. It is easily switched from one operation to the other.
It was the low price point(under $400), it's 110 volts, it's small size, and knowing I wasn't looking to mill 1000 ft/day that made the purchase right for me.
I hope this helps.
