Of those that use an IPOD (brand specific) in their shops, how do you configure it. i.e. a simple dock with wide spread speakers hard wired, air “wired” or a dock with speakers attached? Do you favor one dock company over another? Do any of the docks have a remote? (I’m thinking- locate up high and out of the way and just use the remote)
Thanks

I use my ipod with my worktunes. Hearing protection and music all in one shot. Hard to hear a radio etc. with tools going and earplugs in. Of course I'm a power tool guy so those with hand tools won't need the hearing protection.

Ah, the pod.....the ultimate workshop tool!
I've got 2 configurations: one at work, one at home. At work it is docked into a JBL flying saucer type dock/speaker system: tiny, and not so tinny, but lacks bass. Got it for $35 Buy It Now on Ebay. Wish I could afford something ballsier, but it makes very acceptable noise.
At home, I've got a (Memorex, I think) basic dock RCA'd into a yard sale caliber receiver paired with a couple of small plastic Bose speakers. Quite acceptable. I think the dock cost me all of $12.
For workshop conditions, what with dust and all (yes my shop(s) do get dust accumulation), I would recommend inexpensive. If it gives out, you're not out much, and can replace with something equally easy on the wallet.
Rock On!
I just bought these guys for my birthday :

I have not bought new speakers for the shop in twenty plus years and I am haaaapy ! I may go completely boosheet and get a subwoofer to ! The receiver has a plug on the back for the sub with an automatic shut off trigger.
As far as a doc with a remote there is a Harman Kardon doc

or you can get one of these:

Study it a bit or make a phone call to be sure it works with your iPod or iPhone. I think there will be no problem. If you page down a bit you will see out line drawings of all the pods it works with ( I counted fourteen different Apple pods ).
The stereo receiver comes with a cable that you just plug in to your pod and that is all you need to get hours of tunes but it does not charge the pod and it does not do remote. So you can plug this cable into your dock to get charging and remote.
I also plug my MacBook Air into the stereo using the cable I just described and it works great ! The Air has it's own remote and charger.
I have and use one of these

for the wireless and it is a very reliable device that I have been using with the home stereo for about a year now. Good stuff !
PS: the guy with the fancy shop in the "Organized" thread looks to have similar long skinny speakers mounted on his wall side ways up high. There are no wall mounts on my Sonys so you would have to come up with something and they are heavy so be warned. The receiver is heavy also ~ 23 lb and open to dust on the top. The receiver is also surprisingly large. See the dimensions spec.
Here is a simple compact alternative that takes dust very well. Sounds good but no serious base. ( I have them at my work station at work ) The volume knob is slippery. Changing volume is always a two hand job.

bb,
I got a Jensen dock for Christmas with remote. Small unit that charges the ipod (I think) and has it's own subwoofer. I haven't opened it up yet - but plan to soon so I can't comment on it's quality. They are available at Walmart.
Walmart also has a nice looking powered speaker set up that your ipod plugs into - I think this may be the best bet for a dusty shop. You could place your ipod in a ziploc bag and close it up fairly well to seal out dust, just leave a tiny gap in the zipper for the cord. Comes with a pair of speakers and a subwoofer - but no remote.
Part of the reason I haven't opened the Jensen is I need to find a way to keep the dust off of it and the ipod.
Good luck, and report back here when you get something.

For an inexspensive setup you can use an old pair of computer speakers. A cable that has a headphone plug at both ends can be plugged into the ipod and the headphone jack on the speaker. Stick the ipod in a ziploc to keep the dust out.
If you already have a stereo receiver in the shop, you can get a cable with headphone plug at one end and RCA plug at the other. This attaches your ipod to an aux jack on your stereo.
I use mine with my Worktunes in cool weather and with sony waterproof in the ear headphones, not earbuds in warm weather. Earbuds fall out of my ears too often. I put the IPOD in my shirt pocket to protect it.
i have a bose sound dock, the sound is amazing, and it has a remote, it is fine in a 2 car garage
I bought a Harmon Kardon Receiver, CD, and Cassette from Craigslist. It drives a set of outdoor speakers (forgot what brand). I then connect my iPhone via the 2.5mm to RCA plug.
The best part of this setup is that I can crank up the tunes, and then I actually hear the phone if it rings. It's a good setup."Honey, will you please make some sawdust and track it across the carpet?"
"Yes, dear..."
I do the same thing dana does:
"I use my ipod with my worktunes. Hearing protection and music all in one shot. Hard to hear a radio etc. with tools going and earplugs in. Of course I'm a power tool guy so those with hand tools won't need the hearing protection."
OR I use the earphones that came with it when I'm not working with machines running.
