I’ve been lurking here for a couple months now (got tired of all the off topic political banter on rec.woodworking), but finally saw a thread I thought I could contribute something useful to so went ahead and signed up. Now I thought I’d take a moment to introduce myself.
I’m a newbie woodworker, having designed and made a set of built-in bookshelves and built-in desk in a little alcove that functions as the home office space a couple years ago. These were made from baltic birch plywood (not exactly “fine” woodworking, but it was a start). Pretty quickly my interests moved on to working with “real” wood. My first projects were a small walnut & maple box with box joints and a maple pencil box with purpleheart splines on the mitered corners.
Last spring I took the beginning wood 101 class at the local community college where we all built the same small cabinet. Mine was made of walnut with a frame and panel door that my instructor helped me resaw and bookmatch (see picture).
Over the summer I designed an Asian-influenced chest of drawers for my wife and me which I wanted to build during the fall semester for Christmas. The spring semester is almost over and I’m about to glue up the frame and still have to build the top and 16 drawers. Good thing I didn’t tell her WHICH Christmas! 😉 Anyway, I plan to bring it home and finish it in my modest garage shop (used table saw, hand tools, new stuff as I need it) over the summer. I’ll post pictures of it then.
I’ll chime in when I can offer something. Otherwise, I’ll be posting a lot of beginner questions.

Welcome, Ian, and good to have you on board. We all learn from meeting new people and fellow woodworkers, so your being here helps us all. As you've already seen, there is a wealth of knowledge to be had in here, so enjoy.
And again, welcome.
Welcome Ian, nice boxes. The Gallery is my favorite place to post. It's kind of like show and tell of yester year. It's nice how civilized things have become since they made the politicos go to the time out room! A bit of tongue in cheek there, I was up there with the worst,or maybe I should say the best of them. Anyway, keep posting pictures, they are fun to look at. Bill
welcome
dare I say "snap"?
"welcomedare I say "snap"?"Umm, . . .sure, I guess. Should I know what "snap" means (see, I said I'd be full of newbie questions)?
it comes from the children's card game where the players alternatively turn up a card looking to match with a card that is already face up on the table, the first to shout "snap" wins both cards.
Ian.. HI!

Welcome Ian,
Nice work on your 101 projects, I'll look forward to seeing your future work, in the gallery.
Won't you take a moment and fill in some of the blanks the the "Profile" section? It's always nice to know a little about who your talking to, like where they're from etc.

Done.
