installing a byrd shelix head in a dj-20 jointer
I have removed the original head out of the jointer but I cannot get the belt pulley off of the shaft.
Is their a trick or procedure to getting the key from the slot in the pulley and the shaft, and then getting the belt pulley off.
any help would be appreciated.

Your best bet is to use a hydraulic press, hit it first with some wd-40 or p-b blaster and let it soak for a few minutes. Make sure the pully is well supported so it doesn't distort. If you don't have access to a press I would call auto shops or machine shops you're bound to find one that can help you out.
Good luck
Let some PB Blaster soak for 1/2 hour then gently heat the pulley with a torch. Also, did you check for a second set screw in the pulley? Sometimes two set screws are used. The second one keeps the first one from backing out.
