I just bought my first dado blade for my tablesaw. I’ve made my own zero-clearance inserts for the regular blades, but I’m a little concerned about raising the dado blade into the insert to cut the opening.
Any hints for doing this safely? Or am I better off purchasing a dado insert instead?

The safest way to make a first cut in any new insert is to clamp a 2 by 4 across the table so that it holds the insert down while you raise the blade. You can cut right into the 2 by 4 as long as you don't weaken it by cutting too deeply, or you can use two boards, one across either end of the insert, where they'll be out of the blade area.
