I need to inlay 1/16 Holly into cherry. What do I use to create the groove (dado) for the inlay. I usually use a router but I cannot find a 1/16th bit.

Dear Chasy,
Our authors recommend a variety of inlay techniques using shop-made tools or even a Dremmel tool or laminate trimmer. Check out the articles below and see what method sounds best to you.
Stringing and Banding Made Easy: Dan Faia shows how to make a scratch cutter to create the groove:

In Federal Style Stringing and Banding Steve Latta uses a Dremmel tool or laminate trimmer with a 1/16 in bit. The article includes some sources of supply:

In “Fine line dresses up a drawer front” Jeff Headly inlays a think piece of lining 1/28 in. wide. He recommends a cabinet scraper with a burr or using a home-made scratch stock made from a bandsaw blade or a modified screw-driver. Read the article for more info:

Steve Latta uses shopmade tools for a line-and-berry inlay in this article, but you can also buy them ready made through Lie Nielsen: http://www.lie-nielsen.com/catalog.php?cat=549
Finally, in String Inlay, Garrett Hack also uses shopmade tools and shows how to make them:

Good luck with your project,

Dear Chasy,
If you get the chance, check out this new video on making a scratch stock: http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/SkillsAndTechniques/SkillsAndTechniquesArticle.aspx?id=31290
If you're willing to cut the groove without a machine, Garrett Hack shows step-by-step how to make a scratch stock that'll do the job.
