I have been a member here just a short time and I am so very impressed at the variety and depth of knowledge. I take a few minutes and read the profiles and there are woodworkers on knots that are very impressive. I do wish more people would fill out the profiles. I love to know what part of the country each of you are from and how long you have been making sawdust. I also have a question for woodworkers in the North West. I am going to take some classes at Port Townsend school and I wonder if anyone knows of them. I am sure they are good but would like to know how good there teaching staff is. I have a lot of years of basic knowledge and really want to go to the next level. Thank you all.

There are a lot of notoriously infamous characters here who must remain obscure. There are probably contracts put out by manufactures on some of us for the silly products we have debunked. A certainty.
nope I am one girl who is going to remain in the shadows. Excuse me while I go change my e-amail address and smash my phone to bits. THEY aren't going to get ME !

Ok
: )
All right. I updated my profile. I agree; I enjoy reading these. That is one thing I like in the front of the FWW paper magazine as well.roc who is a born hermit
Thanx ROC. I bet that didn't hurt as much as you thought it would. LOL Now the second step in our program is to put up a picture once in a while of something we made. I love the pictures. They give me inspiration and a connection to people who love wood and see what it can be. Sawdust is the ultimate recycling. Woodwork is the only place we can burn our mistakes and keep warm.
Hi, Wolf. I have a friend who took a 5-day class (introduction to woodworking) and was very pleased with it. Her husband worked in a cabinet shop for years, but she wanted to try that class and had nothing but good things to say. They have excellent equipment in addition to quality staff.
I live on Bainbridge Island, about 45 minutes from Port Townsend, and am planning to take the class on using SketchUp this summer, an perhaps a class on turning if they happen to be offering one.
Thanx forestgirl. I want to take their intermediate cabinet class. I also want to try their finish class. The biggest problem we have is trying to get a great finish in a reasonable amount of time. I also wish they had a class just on design. Putting wood together properly seems to be the biggest challenge. Living on an island sounds neat, makes travel a challenge. LOL. We live on a peninsula, actually kind of a sand spit. One way on and one way off.
I think I've been to your sand spit, wolf, albeit a long time ago. Our island has a bridge on the north end that takes us to the Kitsap peninsula and beyond (Port Townsend, Olympic Peninsula. The ferry gets us to Seattle. Bridge is only 2 lanes though, so we have scheduled traffic jams when the ferry unloads many cars head for Kitsap.
Have you been to Port Townsend? Do you know about the Spruce Goose Cafe and the Chimicum Cafe? Great places to grab a bite. And the air museum at the PT airport, they just moved into their new building. It's an all-volunteer effort, they have some great old planes in there!
Good luck with the classes. Do you happen to have a link to a website??forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I am too small to have website just yet. That and I don't have the time to design and update one right now. We are going to put a little sign up though, LOL. I haven't been to that side of the sound, yet. We try to go everywhere, been to Seattle and points north. I am looking forward to exploring around the sound and across the water to B.C. Thanx for the tip on the air museum. One more great reason to get up that way. I do love this end of the world. It is all so beautiful. Back to my shop, later.
Ooops, I didn't ask a clear question....I was wondering about a link to the Port Townsend school. I'll just Google it, sorry!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Duh, sorry, maybe I should go to school to learn to read. http://www.ptwoodschool.com/ and they do have a class on woodturning. I want to take it some day as I have a crazy idea to incorporate turnings in the corners of cabinets. But for now I have other ideas Other adventures to pursue. Later.
hey wolf,
everytime i've taken a class so that i might go to a higher level, it's been the right thing to do. this also applies to on line tutorials. much of the skills increase of the past few years, i attribute to lessons learned on knots. there's good people here.
welcome,
eef
You are so right Eef. I have spent half a lifetime trying to learn and it is the essence of life. No matter what you should never stop learning. I love to learn especially from really talented individuals. Thank you for your encouragement
