Friendly reminder about the useful feature ‘Ignore this Author’. Those posters who have lost their happy pills, and those posters who angrily veto your advice to promote their own can be filtered out with ‘Ignore this Author’ under the Options menu or on the individual’s profile page.
Also, I encourage anyone who *vehemently* disagrees with my posts to use the ‘Ignore this Author’ feature to block my messages from their view. That will reduce the number of nonhobbyists who disagree with me by name calling.
thank you,
Andy (no gavel, no crown, no respect)

No gavel or "flaming E" (I think that's what it's supposed to be) but you still get respect.
Andy; I enjoy reading your posts, so you have my respect.
Regards Mike; who dosn't have a gavel or crown, but is still the king of his shop
Thanks Mike. I was not baiting for compliments, but its nice to know someone gets something from them or I wouldn't bother. :)Andy
Does this mean I can't call someone a poo-poo-head?
Bummer!Tom Hintz
Because there is always more to learn!
The ignore button is the most underrated thing on Knots.

The ignore button is the most underrated thing on Breaktime. Some threads are completely devoid with ignore set on about 10 people.mvflaim wrote:

I wonder?.. If they are non-anything except for manners and class....
I say if they get really out of line, FineWoodworking will shut then down.
Even I have gotten out of line and I love 'almost' anybody! Sort of like my "open mouth.. insert foot" thing...
Yes, I was called, by an E-MAIL from a staff member of FineWoodworking for something I typed to somebody. I was warned in no uncertain words..., I was wrong, thinking back upon it!
However, my words were really not intended to the receiver. Just something in words of the post that reminded me of war or whatever.. I do not recall what was typed/said.
I went to Knots and started reading. Some words, something, just triggered something within me... I am sure not any words directed to me and probably not about what I was thinking of at the time I read the post...
The day before I came back from a funeral for a young man that was killed. A Marine.. The son of my wives best friend... My wife died years before.. Her lady friend and her son came over to talk to me many times...
I would say many folks that sound off are REALLY NUTS or just 'Had a moment in time'

Will,You're right. Fine Woodworking itself pretty much takes care of the problem of offensive posting. One of the best things about this forum is that trolling and offensive posting is at a minimum. It once WAS a problem and there were threads that went on for hundreds and hundreds of vitriol-containing messages, baiting and useless diatribe. That's been stopped. On the other hand, it seems that the political correctness of FWW's approach in controlling things has resulted in a bit of over-reaction to occasional honest and harmless emotional responses.I think alternate viewpoints and experiences are the richness of the experience here and the way knowledge is shared. The "Ignore Author" function is really unneeded and is a silly "stick-your-head-in-the-sand" approach. Why in the world even come here if that's what one is going to do?In my opinion, the originator of this thread is someone who can't deal with viewpoints other than his and reacts to them in an angry, judgmental way and by claiming he's been abused and that others are insisting he do things their way.To each his (or her) own, I guess.Rich

I think I do not agree.. I think more than nice to
The ignore button option would not be needed if everyone subscribed to respecting the others opinions.
Is this the rather reasonable and reasonably asked question that started this whole brouhaha?
To wit:
Who is Forestgirl, why does she have the right to shut down a thread? Is she a subscriber or a company person? Does anyone have the right to shut down a thread? Do I? From a company policy perspective, how does that work exactly ?
TT
It seems to me that the responses from those tripping over their last half drop of testosterone to come to FG's and Taunton's defense were as much to blame as anything else.

You saw that also? I thought I was the only one.I followed along from the beginning when the OP asked the question and was not surprise to see what followed.
Yup.
Dusty,
With respect..... :-)
I disagree that we should all respect each other's opinions, no matter what they are There are some crazy, silly and outright dangerous opinions about. There are also those that contain the fundamental underlying opinion of "I am right and disrespect anyone who disagrees with me". In the worst cases, the opinion drives its host to murder all those not similarly infected.
So, perhaps what we might consider doing is respecting the person holding the opinion, despite disagreeing vehemently with that opinion - even pouncing on it, biting it savagely in the throat and (hopefully) leaving it for dead.
The trick is to understand that "opinions" are distinct and separate entities from the person in whom they happen to have taken up residence. The opinion might be beneficial to its host; or it might be toxic. In either case, we may beat an opinion upside its head, should we take agin it, without disrespecting it's human host.
Of course, the host must also realise that the opinion is not in fact an intrinsic part of his or her body (like a liver or big toe) but a thing more akin to a virus or a bacterium. Indeed, should we be succesful in eradicating a toxic opinion, the former host might even feel relief that we have done so (in time, after the soreness has gone). "Why did I ever become a fundamentalist"?
****
Of course, there are those who enjoy exterminating not just an opinion they deem a pest but also the person holding it. This is where we should perhaps draw a line and shout,"Foul; belay that personal assasination, varlet"!
Lataxe, who hits poisonous memes with a lump hammer.
I am fundamentalist also but that’s only my opinion. :)
"I would say many folks that sound off are REALLY NUTS or just 'Had a moment in time'"Will, I agree, but when someone has *many* moments *over* time, then I put them in the former category and exercise this thread's title. :) Andy
Andy,
You are indeed a voice of reason! What in the world are you doing on Knots?? <gr>

"You are indeed a voice of reason! What in the world are you doing on Knots?"Jerry, I think its reasonable to visit every few months and share some things, but not reasonable to put up with this place for longer than a few weeks at a time. ;)Andy
Andy,
Shortly after leaving my message to you, I encountered two more Trolls. Some of these people have serious social problems. A few of them are just plain nuts.
