If I ever decide to build something with 22 inset drawers again I would appreciate it if all of you would call my sanity into question. As we speak, actually as I type, I am 15 drawers into fitting a 22 drawer apothecary chest I am making for my daughters medical school graduation present. It is getting just a bit tedious. :^)
I shouldn’t complain too much as I am sure that she went through much worse over the course of her education, but I just needed to vent. Thanks for letting me blow off some steam.
Rob, beginning to like the look of overlay drawers more and more.

Rob, ARE YOU CRAZY????
No, you aren't. You are a caring father who is making a great present for a wonderful daughter.
My hat is off to you, Dad. Perhaps while you are fitting you can remember teaching her to ride a bike, swim or catch a frog.
Best regards to her and you.
University of Wisconsin, Madison. Why do you ask?

Hey Pard...lets see some pictures of that 'gift' that's making you crazy. Love to see it...
Jeff
Jeff,
I am almost done with it. When I am I will post pics in the gallery section under apothecary chest. Look for it in the next day or two.
Rob
Love can make you do crazy things, what a cool thing to build for a med student. So much better to look at and touch than the metal cabinets. What kind of finish are you planning?

dgreen,
It already has a finish. I am just fitting false fronts on the drawers. The chest is curly maple veneer with a cherry face frame and figured cherry veneered drawer faces wrapped with maple cock beading. I used two light coats of garnet shellac to give the maple and cherry a little darker color and two more light coats of extra pale shellac after I got the color where I wanted it.
There is over 250 individual pieces that had to be milled, cut to size, assembled and finished in this project, with about 30 of those requiring veneering also. It took much longer than I expected it would.
Rob
WOW! Thats a lotta pieces to keep track of. I usually screw up a few times on a project with 50 pieces. Sounds like a beautiful chest, your daughter will be very proud of it. I hope you post some pictures. Did you make the veneer or did you find a commercial source?------------------------------------

I have to make things like this to justify my veneer addiction. I buy most of it on ebay from a few select sellers that always have good quality stuff. I just hang back and look for really cool stuff that no one is bidding on, if it is nice and under $.50 a square foot I usually end up bidding, if it is reeeaaly nice I might go as high as $1.00 a foot. Compare that to veneer dealers that get $2.00 to $6.00 a foot or more and you can see why I have enough veneer to cover every wall in my house. :^) I've got some special domestic veneer and some pretty cool exotic stuff too. I may have to start selling some of it though because some of the lots I buy have 100 sq. ft. or more and I will never be able to use all of it.
I will be posting some pics in the gallery in the next day or two. Check it out and let me know what you think.

I must confess to an addiction to quilted maple, I probably have enough to build a small house. I envy you your e-bay connections for the veneers, I have looked many times but never bid. I cherish my connections for old stereo gear and imagine you must feel the same about reliable veneer sellers. Keep me in mind when you decide to sell some excess.------------------------------------

Rob, I can understand your feelings...All will be well in the end , for sure. I look forward to seeing the finished job.
I am posting some pics of two cabinets I made for someone who has
####collection of raptor eggs, from Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries.Last time I checked, he had not yet been imprisoned by the "Police" for hoarding, but it could happen (;).
Each drawer had to have a glass top fitted in a frame which sat in rabbets on the drawer sides, to exclude insects. Each drawer had to have divisions of varying dimensions since the eggs differ in size.
The wood is Iroko with Jacaranda for the drawer sides.
The pics have been scanned off photos- maybe they can be tarted up a bit by a computer guru.Philip Marcou

Just when I felt that my sanity was returning, I read your post and now I'm backsliding. - lol
I'm in the midst of a large cabinet order and have completed three pieces with a total of 10 inset drawers (and 5 false fronts). The next two pieces are for a master bathroom vanity and tall cabinet that will have 20 working drawers and two false fronts.
Projects like this definitely re-affirm the adage "Plan your work, then work your plan"!! - lol
