the star means that there is a new post in that thread, since you last visited, and the paper clip means that there is a file (usualy an image) attached.

Personally I always search for the paper clips, I love to look at the pictures of other peoples work, problems and tips. :)
Here's another tip, Bob. If you run across an attachment that you want to view, you can view it in a new "window" (keeping the message window as is) by Right Clicking with your mouse, and selecting "Open in new window." [assuming your computer uses Windows operating system]
