Here is my problem, I have been asked to construct a desk and conference table, the top is to be figured sycamore, the problem I have is in the shape and the edge treatment, The shapes are elliptical and one has a trimmed side (kind of D shaped) . the 1 1/5 to 2 in. slabs must be edge formed on the underside in a decreasing radius towards the top , ending in a tight radius that wraps around the top. so if you look at it from the edge it looks like the under side of a dinner plate edge, gradually sloping up and out .
My problem is how to make the edge look homogenous with the top and have a smooth transition to the top. If it were square or had faceted sides I would construct with a substrate , laminate the top surface and then glue on a solid wood edge, but being elliptical this would not go as every section of edge has a different and changing radius.
I have thought of making the slab from a fine grained material , possibly light density fiberboard, then forming the edge then laminating the top on ,and finishing the edge later to “match” the top but then how do you treat the edge to look slick, If you use veneer there will be a glue line and the edge may feather, if you use P-lam there will be
that black line. I know it can be done as it looks great in the fancy colour brochure from the exclusive designer company that can’t supply it cause there backed up with orders .
I am really stumped on this one so any help would be appreciated.

Terry, do you have a vaccuum press? A recent issue of FWW had an article on wrapping veneer over a curved edge on a round table. Never done it myself but looked pretty do-able. Good luck,
Mike
