So I head out to the local Rockler yesterday to pick up a set of bullet catches for the doors on a cab I’m finishing up, and a small bottle of glue. My Lovely Assistant, having nothing better to do, accompanies me.
I walk out with not only my catches and bottle of glue, but a new $20 blade (on sale) for my little Dozuki. (I had recently noticed that the teeth on mine were starting to break off.)
My Lovely Assistant walks out with a new lathe.
!
I gotta work on my shopping skills.

PS: After removing the old blade from the Dozuki, I was surprised at how flexible the thing is once it’s out of the saw. I’m keeping it for stuff like trimming pegs, etc. Kinda like getting two tools for the price of the replacement blade.

Mike ,
The old blade sounds like good scraper material .

Nope -- it's paper thin and probably too brittle to roll an edge on. Still, it's super flexible outside it's carrier and has virtually no set, so it'll be great for cutting flush to a surface. Definately a keeper.

Mike! Gee.. I have some Japanese saws and when I need a new blade they are always 'out of stock' and I have to purchase the whole thing!

Mike, I thought you were a gentleman! You made her carry it out all by herself? I bet she never lets you get close to it much less use it!
:>)
Will,
That was funny.
Hey, maybe if Mike's a good guy she'll let him borrow her leaf blower to clean up after her! Turning makes a lot of dust and curls of wood all over the place.
It's the least he could do after making her carry that lathe, right?

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Bob..
My old leaf blower died in a puff of smoke and some flame this fall. Now I have to use the shop vacuume on blow. Not the same but still sort of works.

Last time I bought a stationary tool, she helped me carry it into the shop. Thenceforth, she has a standing rule -- "No tools over 100 lbs." ;-)
As she was closing the deal on the lathe, I said "Hey wait a minute -- is it over 100 lbs.?" She replied "I already checked - 74 pounds" and she picked it up and walked out of the store with it. (It's just a mini -- 18"+/- bed.)
And it's definately her toy. She enjoys turning much more than I do. (She already has a few projects planned.) For my part, I dug out an old set of Marples turning tools still in the box from the last time I used them some 35 yrs ago, knocked off a bit of rust and put an edge on 'em.
Here's the thing -- if it was a new tool I'd bought for myself, I'da had it out of the box, assembled, and half wore out by now. She hasn't even opened the box to smell the Cosmoline yet. Go figger!

Mike,
Having one's spouse involved in woodworking can certainly make it easier when one wants to buy a new tool. To a degree I, too, am blessed with such a wife.
Although my career is not woodworking (woodworking is my therapy) I was lucky to be V.P. in my wife's woodworking business. I have a wonderful General 3 hp tablesaw. Then, there is my wife's iindustrial saw that cost three times as much.
You, like me, are a lucky man to have such a wife.

Hey, you've met me -- as you know, I'm lucky to have a wife at all! It's a freakin' miracle My Lovely Assistant agrees to even spend time with me, let alone be married to me!
As for the tool angle, I'm trying to figure out how I can get her interested in a Saw Stop without me having to first cut off any of my extremities.

Have you thought about buying her one as a surprise for her birthday? If she questioned your intentions, you could easily respond that you were simply concerned about the safety of her various parts. She'd probably be sufficiently impressed to let you use it from time to time.Verne
If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there to cut it up and make something with it . . . what a waste!<!----><!----><!---->

Now that could work!
