I recently shipped a project that I wrapped and used some Scotch tape to hold the wrapping paper in place.
The project was black walnut with six or seven coats of Minwax poly of rubbed on finish. The finish had cured for at least three weeks. The finish was applied over bare wood with no stain. The tape was in place for about a week.
When the tape was removed the finish peeled away down the the bare wood!
Was this unusual or to be expected? What could I do to increase the adhesion of the poly on bare wood?
I’m now refinishing the project!

WoodRiver Bevel Edge Socket Chisel Set
These chisels are well balanced, with a light-weight handle that makes gripping them down by the edge during chopping less fatiguing than many other chisels. Each chisel only requires a few minutes of work before its back is polished and ready to go. Similarly, the bevels all have a consistent grind that is quick to hone to razor sharpness. The smartly shaped beveled edges give the tool good mass, but with a very fine, consistent land (the flat between the side bevel and back) that won’t interfere with working in confined spaces.

improve poly adhesion
I am not a finishing expert by any means, but it sounds like there was something on the walnut before you started with the poly.
You might try wiping the walnut with acetone before re-finishing with poly. Test a extra piece first.

You should let it dry for a longer period. Try on an extra piece first.
Mike,
Besides wiping the wood with mineral spirits or some other solvent, I mix up a fresh batch of shellac for a base coat before applying varnish.
