I like having a small vise just below eye level for working on small parts and pieces. I decided to add one to the New Fangled Workbench that John White designed, and to make it easy to drop down out of the way when not in use. The following pictures demonstrate how it works:
Pix 1 & 2 vise hidden below the center well.
Pix 3 & 4 well opened to reveal vise below.
Pix 5 vise slides up and is held for a moment by the end vise jaw turned to hold it.
Pix 6 & 7 show the slider/keeper in storage position and then in keeper position.
Pix 8 & 9 vise lowered to the keeper and clamped between the jaws of the end vise.
Pix 10 keeper from the front.
Pix 11 & 12 Woodcraft Universal 2 Position locking vise in upright and side positions.
Pix 13 & 14 assembly moved to the side vise and planing beam so that other height adjustments can be made or to free up the end vise.

Cool
Versatility rocks. Or, should that be vise-atility? ;-)
Hidden Vise, or Vice?
Thanks. Building a lot of cool stuff. That's the problem. I am beginning to think that I have a hidden vice. Lately I have been building more things for my shop than in my shop. Since no requests have come from family or friends, except one to make a minor repair on a child's rocker, I have fallen into the habit of making stuff for the shop. I've been putting off making a Windsor chair and now I'm gonna quit this shop improvement jazz and start on the chair.

Or vice-versa. (-;
