I would appreciate any help that you might send my way on which type of system would be best for me given my $ limitations. I have about $500 to spend setting up a HVLP spray system for a typical home workshop (WaterBased, Solvent Based, Shelac, some latex paint, pigmented primers, etc). I keep reading goods things about the “asturo ecc” and that it has a low CFM requirement. I currently own a PC sidestack compressor #CF2400 which is only a 2 horse, 4 gallon unit rated at 8.3 cfm @40pisg. and a 50% duty cycle which I was wondering if could reliably be used with a conversion gun. I ocassionaly finish book cases or entertainment centers (larger pieces). I am also looking at the Wagner 2600 as a turbine alternative. This is my first venture in spraying and I would prefer not to purchase a system that is so limited I would outgrow it in a short time.
Thanks in advance for your help
Tom

Go to www. homeseadfinishing.com and look at Jeff's line of Asturo guns.
For about $500.00 I purchased a Asturo 9010 HVLP with a 2 qt Cal Technologies pressure pot with 5' hoses. I also purchased 2 additional tips, a 1.2, and a 2.5mm. There are about a dozen different tip sizes, which run about $50.00 apiece. They consist of a cap assembly and needle.
The unit has performed extremely well, and I think your compressor should be able to handle the gun.
I think the pressure pot is a must when laying down heavy bodied material such as acrylic, which I thin about 15% with water. It sprays WB and nitro lacquer very well, but you must take care to clean the hoses before using clear finishes. The gun is easy to disassemble and clean. You may want to purchase a cleaning kit with the unit.
You might want to consider a 1qt pot that attaches directly to the gun. This is easier to clean, but restricts your movements in tight areas. The pressure pots make it possble to spray in any different attitudes that a gravity gun would not be able to perform well.
The fit and finish on these guns is remarkable, and the support from Homestead has been great. I plan on buying another unit this year.
I agree with Tom. I too bought an Asturo ECO with a 2 qt. pressure pot , 5' hose and extra tips. I purchased from http://www.finishsystems.com/asturohvlpguns.html as homestead didn't ship out of the US.
I'm extremely happy with the quality of the gun and the quality of the finishes it delivers. It needs only 7 cfm. A huge plus for me is its ability to spray in tight places in any position as opposed to a gravity or siphon setup.

Continuing this thread...I'm in the same boat, needing to get into the spraying business and starting from a point of near-total ignorance (yes, the books are on order). My compressor is wimpy and won't drive anything other than a brad nailer, so I can either invest in a turbine system of a new compressor. The latter appeals most. However, the pressure pot idea, while probably best from a functional point of view, may not be practical for the small number items I'll be spraying at any one time, due to cleanup time for hoses, etc.
What might be some other alternatives? I'd like to stay at or under $500 if possible, assuming I get the kitchen cabinet job I'm bidding on...

I bought an Accuspray system about 6 years ago - 23k - I think I paid about $500 for the gun and the small turbine. It does everything I want. In the future, I will probably get a pressure pot that I will power up with my twin stack compressor. As far as the gun is concerned, it is very, very good. Homestead sells accuspray as well.
I have a accuspray conversion gun (uses compressed air) It is a lvlp which is designed to be used with a small compressor. I use a 1 1/2HP 4 gal emglo. Its called a versamax (or something like that) you can find it at http://www.compliantspraysystems.com

I purchased the wagner conversion gun from gleem paint with the paint pot as well. It works well, I have a 3 hp 4 gal pancake, and it works well with the 1 qt cup. You could start out with this gun and add the pressure pots on later. I purchased the gun, pot, extra needles & tips for around $400.
Cal-Tecnologies sells a 1qt. pressure cup that will replace the cup on most guns. $104 at Homestead. Check it out.
