Hello all,
I’m new to the Knots forum and look forward to getting acquainted with the whole discussion process. I’ve had a problem that maybe somebody could shed some light on. I have some property in Colorado with a lot of aspen. Anybody who’s been in our aspen forests knows that aspen generates a lot of downed wood. I’ve been making furniture, boxes, toys and whatnot with it. I use a Laguna bandsaw to cut my logs. I’ve found that cutting standing dead trees works best, but sometimes there are just too many attractive logs on the ground to pass. When you cut it you often get some worm holes that can give the wood a lot of character. BUT does anybody know of a convenient way to kill the critters? I’ve searched the web and haven’t really come up with a method that I can do it myself. I’ve thought of approaching a small lumber mill and seeing if I can place my rough cut lumber in their ovens but was hoping for a “home cure”. I’ve also posted in several forums but nobody has any tips yet. Am getting desperate!!!! HELP!!!!

If the boards are small enough a few days in the freezer will do it.
Hadn't thought of that! Good idea, unfortunately the boards are too long. They're 5 to 6 feet long.
The majority of wood boring bugs, but not all, will only survive in green wood, so your problem will, most likely, be self limiting once the wood has dried sufficiently. In general the boring bugs that you find in trees do not present a risk of invading your house or lumber pile. Hopefully a bug specialist will respond to your inquiry.

The best way to kill any creature is to deprive it of oxygen. If you could lay hands on a vacuum press, then it would be as easy as putting some lumber into the press, removing all the air you can, then letting it sit for a week or so. It should be possible to get a bag for a vacuum set-up that will accommodate the size of your boards.

don't know the answer to your problem, but suggest re-posting it with the subject line "killing bugs in wood" or something more specific, to attract the attention of some of the experts here.
thanks stantheman,
will do so.

Been there, done that. Had three hundred acres of land in Haliburton county for twenty years....built three bush cabins, and cut my own wood with a chain saw mill...before I stacked the wood I used a paint thinner and painted both sides....served two purposes.....1 kills bugs and 2 stops mold and fungus from growing......worked for me.
Good Luck, and have fun
