Hello all.
Thought I would jump in here and introduce myself. My name is Bill Cody. I live in central California. I have 3 children and a very patient wife 🙂
I have been addicted to this hobby since Jr High school. I have just recently, in the last couple of years, re-kindled my love of making things from wood. I work out of my garage shop and specialize in making saw dust and occasionally a few projects for friends and family.
Anyway, Hello from Madera, California. I look forward to meeting you all.

Welcome aboard Bill. I'm Rob and I live in Alabama(no I don't have a banjo). Tell us about your interests, the type of wood you like to work, the equipment you use and anything else that comes to mind. Don't be bashful and I'll look forward to your posts.
No banjo huh? Bummer :)
Well to answer your questions, I have done most of my work in Red Oak. But If I have a choice I prefer Cherry. I built a rocking horse for my Nephew last year from Maple, Walnut and Cherry and I really like the way Cherry machines and finishes.
The next project in the works is a corner cupboard for the dining room. I am looking for plans and suggestions. Norm had a beauty in NYW the other day but the door construction demands a router table.
As far as the shop is concerned, here is a list of tools:
Powermatic 64A table saw (Christmas present from SWMBO)
Jet 14" bandsaw
Jet 6" jointer
Jet 1200 DCS
Dewalt 12-1/2: planer
Hitachi 10" CMS
Portercable 690 router
Craftsman (I know, I know) Drill Press
Delta 16" VS scroll saw
Misc. sanders.
(no product loyalty here. I buy them all)
Looking for a router table. Might build Norm's. May buy one from Sommerfeld. Not sure yet. I think the tax man may decide that one for me.
I share the garage with my wife's car so everything is mobile.

I'd say you're fully equipped to handle about anything. My shop has been built up over 6 years and consists of a Ridgid 3650 tablesaw, 14 inch Delta bandsaw, 6 inch Delta jointer, 10 inch Delta mitersaw, Dewalt planer, Dewalt scrollsaw, two stage dust collector, Delta 12 inch drill press and assorted hand tools, routers, drills, sanders, jigsaw, etc.. I like using a well crafted hand tool more than any power tool. I also like finishing a project in less than a year, so power tools get alot of use. There was an interesting article on building a neat looking router table in FWW this month. I need a better router table and may build this project this weekend.
I will have to check that issue out. I currently only subscribe to WOOD magazine but I have been looking at FWW for a while. I guess I need to get of my butt and subscribe.
Sounds like you have a nicely equipped shop. How do you like the two stage dust collector?
Bill
One day I turned on my dust collector(Delta 50-660) and the sunlight was just grazing the filter bag. I proceeded to witness a veritable plume of very fine dust coming through the 5 micron bag!!! I have been using my dust collector for several months and a small cake of dust had accumulated on the inside of the bag which I have read should increase the efficiency of dust collection. I ultimately solved my dust problem by removing the filter bag and connecting a 4 inch hose from the dust collector and passing it through a window in my shop. Now all the dust is outside my shop.
Bill in Mad,
Welcome. You'll note elsewhere here that several of us have built Norm's router table...you might want to explore that option.
I bought a cheap set of plans for a corner cupboard from Rockler...$ 4.95 I think. I want to build two matching corner cupboards for the diningroom. Cherry wood for one using ply and solid is about $500..ouch! It's gonna have to wait...or else maybe a different idea..
Anyhow, glad to have ya here...

Hey Bill,
Welcome! John from that other coast (CT)! Glad you decided to hop on board! I am a fellow Powermatic owner, tablesaw & jointer, as well as Jet.....drill press. So, my freind, enlighten me, what is SWMBO? I get as far as Some White Motherf#@$% and I can't seem to come up with the rest. Tell, me the truth, I'm offbase aren't I? Let me try again:. Santa With My Own Bank.......no that can't be it. Help me out here!
Thanks!
John

Dear Bill,
SHMBO....I like that! Thanks for the clarification!
John
Dear Bill,
Sorry if I seemed a bit off the wall on my previous replies. Like you, I am married with three (soon to be four!) kids and we have been on a rough run with the kids being sick. The other night, we had just put the baby (6mos) back in bed and then my son (4 yrs) was up from 1-2:00 AM throwing up, once we got him, the bed, and the bathroom, squared away, the baby was up again, time for another bottle, ( we caught some "American Chopper" as well) its been that type of week (month?) I'm sure you've been there. Welcome to Knots and let's talk again soon!
John
I feel your pain man. Been there and done that. We watch American Choppers too.
Good show. Now go get some sleep :-)
Bill
Here is a great Router Table you can build!

Hi, Bill, welcome aboard! Madera, huh? Is that in the wine country?? I can't remember (an old, sun-dried Davis gal here, now relocated to The Great Northwest).
Hope you enjoy your visits here, and please post in the Gallery!!!
forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
We are right in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley.
We have raisins, wine grapes, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, all kids of ag here.

Hi Bill, my name is Robert, I am across the country in Williamsburg, Virgina. I think you will find this forum very useful, alot of good information here. I have been building furnture for about thirty years, as a hobby, occasionally some paying cabinet work . I like reproduction work, and clocks. I recently moved and now have a great shop, I will post a picture soon. Welcome to the Forum.
Regards, Robert
Hey Bill,
Saw you were in my neck of the woods, Sacramento, CA., and I figured I would welcome you and introduce myself. First of all, my wife was pressuring me when I picked Norm to be my ID, so don't crucify me. I am 26 years old and have a wonderful wife and a great 1 year old chocolate lab. I love woodworking and have been doing it for about 4 years now. Since I have built many of the furniture pieces in our house my wife has been very open to my tool purchases. Presently I build with:
Grizzly 1023 cabinet saw
Older Craftsman RAS
Jet 16" bandsaw
Jet 17" drillpress
Jet 1-1/2hp shaper
Delta 6" jointer
Delta 12-1/2" planer
Bandit pressure pot w/Asturo gun
And would you believe all this is used in my one car garage. It's all done with mobile bases and I have actually become pretty efficient in my building process.
It's nice to meet you and I hope to pick your brain, and everyone's on this forum, soon.
Ryan
Hello Ryan,
Nice to meet you. I get up to your neck of the woods now and then. Nice town.
Sounds like you have the same problem I do. Lots of tools and no dedicated shop to put them in.
Maybe I should get serious about the lotto and solve all my problems at once :-)
It sure is nice to have a wife that will put up with us "tool junkies".
Mine has but up with me for nearly 22 years.
See you around.

Hello All,
I'm also a newbie in Knots. I've been lurking in here and Breaktime for a while.
I'm 32, married, fire fighter / paramedic near (just past the 'burbs) Houston, TX. I like to make cabinets and patio furniture. I also do finish carpentry in for beer & BBQ (it's accepted as legal tender for services rendered in TX) Norm & Bil - I would love to come out your way and pick up a trailer full of cheap redwood (compared to $3.50 per linear foot of dimensional 2×4 over here).
As far as tools, I feel underqualified but, here goes...
Dewalt 744 TS
Dewalt 618PK multibase router (w/ homemade table)
Delta 12" Benchtop DP
Bostitch Compressor
Bostitch 16ga finish nailer
Bostich 18 ga brad nailer
Bostich 18 ga narrow crown stapler
Dewalt (can't remember the number) CMS
Delta 6" benchtop jointer
My "shop" is in a two car garage shared with my wife's car & my extended cab, full size chevy truck. Rome wasn't built in a day, take your time and do it right the first time.
Big Rick
Welcome to the forum! Fire-fighter and para-medic huh? At my age I may give you a call anytime. :>)

Welcome to the forum! Send gold nuggets if you find them to:
sarge in "Atlanta"... he.. he..
Proud member of the : "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Hey Sarge, Man if I send them nuggets to Atlanta they have to promise to buy some good pitching for the team. I hated to see Maddux go. My wife and I are long time Braves fans. We drive up to San Francisco whenever they come to town to play the Giants. We like the Giants too but we are serious "Tomahawk Choppers".
Nice to meet you.
Bill

After Maddux's performance last year, I think the time is right for him and the Brave's to view some new scenery. I wish him all the luck in the world with the Cubbie's. I have a feelin' he will preform well there this year.
Regards...

Maddux is without a doubt the best I have ever seen. I hated to see him go but that's how baseball is nowadays.
I wish him well. We still have Ortiz....right?
And is far as my wife is concerned, as long as Chipper is there she's happy :-)
