I have a craftsman 14″ bandsaw with tilting head, and the lock is starting to fail allowing the head to tilt when using the saw. It is a slow change and very frustrating. Are these locks repairable? Or is a new saw in order? Thanks, Mike

Can you give me the model number of the saw? Typically it is on a small metal plate riveted to the saw and will be something like 113.12345. There may be a similar plate on the motor but typically that only refers to the motor's model number, not the saw's.
Thanks, John White
sears model #113.236150--thanks john
This is a scroll saw yes?
Neither of the sites I use to search for owners manuals could turn up a manual for this machine so I'm not sure how the tilt mechanism is assembled.
In any case, the saw is probably repairable, especially since parts are available through Sears. The most likely failure is that a small part that actually does the locking, a nut, or a lever, or a pin that is shifted when you engage the lock has become worn out and replacing it will solve the problem. You can take it to a repair center, Sears will tell you where to go with it, but the labor charge may not make it economical.
Play with the lock mechanism, most machines aren't that complicated, with luck you'll be able to figure out which part is no longer doing its job and you can replace it yourself.

it's a "seasoned" 14" band saw, maybe that's why no manuals can be found. Perhaps I should use this as a reason to upgrade! Thanks again, Mike.+
I have found two references to that Sear's model number and they are both for tilting head scroll saws. Are you sure of the model number you gave me and that it is a bandsaw, a machine with two large wheels and probably an eight foot long blade? If you do have a tilting head band saw with that model number I would love to see a photograph of it.In any case it can probably be fixed, sounds like you really want to buy a new machine.John W.

let's try 113.248210. Sorry, the other # is from a different tool.
I tracked down a parts sheet for the saw and it has, typical for Sear's tools, a way too complicated lock mechanism with lots of little parts that can come loose and/or wear out. I am sure that if you opened up the base you can figure out how the mechanism works and figure out why the lock no longer holds. There are no big parts, probably just a small soft metal cam or bushing is worn out and needs to be adjusted or replaced.John W.
