I am new to Roanoke, Virginia, and I’m looking for hardwood suppliers for domestic, exotic, and specialty wood products. I’m not having much luck finding anything but building supply warehouses. I prefer to buy rough or skip planed kiln dried stock. I have found a few promising suppliers in Pennsylvania, but there must be someone in my area. I have searched the Internet and Yellow Pages, so please don’t suggest that. I am looking for specific contact information please.
Thank you

I know a place in Fishersville (1 1/2 hr away). Otherwise I am also new to Roanoke and looking around for wood. I bought some nice walnut out of the newspaper. If you find out any other sources, please share with me.
Best regards,
Frank
Here is a link to a list I found today.http://www.ace-lynchburg.com/business/cat/Lumber.htmIt's not very informational, but maybe there's someone in there. Virginia is so thick with trees, they are like weeds, but it seems like there isn't any stock for retail sale here. I guess it all gets exported or bought by the furniture industry here. There must be some folks around here with band saw mills that harvest and mill their own lumber. The nearest place I've seen a decent web site for that has figured wood and slabs is in Pennsylvania, 5 hours away. There is a listing for Roanoke Forest Products. I called them once but only got an answering machine. I haven't called back since. I think I'll try them again tomorrow. I'm not really looking for any stock until early next year, but I want to find the suppliers and check them out now.
My friend Starke is in Fishersville. He combs thru the shorts at a lumberyard and picks out the clear, straight, pretty stuff. It is a little more expensive, but very little waste. It is an easy 90 min ride. If you are interested I can get you his #.

I emailed Roanoke Forest Products today, and as I suspected, they sell by the truckload to the furniture industry. They were nice enough to forward my email to Jim Taylor of O'Shea Lumber Company in Pennsylvania who recommended Wall Lumber Company in Mayodan NC. They were also recommended in one of the posts above. They appear to have an excellent selection for very good prices. They are a 4 hour round trip from Roanoke. That's better than 10 hours round trip to Pennsylvania. Their web site is http://www.walllumber.com/default.aspThe Hardwood Group mentioned above looks promising. I don't know about their prices though. Their web site is http://www.hardwoodgroup.com/roanoke.html I haven't contacted them yet, but the supplier in Floyd mentioned above is:

You may also want to look at the Hardwood Store of NC. http://www.hardwoodstore.com/
They are located in Gibsonville, NC.
photo,
Wall Lumber is in Mayodan NC, on the way to Greensboro. A while back someone gave me the name of a place in Floyd. I'll see if I can find it for you. Will post back if I do.

Wow, talk about luck. I'm from Roanoke that had to leave. There's a place right there in Roanoke over close to the civic center that has good stuff they supply all the cabinet shops in the area. I also know a guy up in Floyd County that has good stuff if your willing to do cash. Give me a bit and I'll find the old links in my stuff somewhere and shoot them to you. I wish I could come back to roanoke, but the paycheck does not permit. PS, the guys at the local woodcraft over by the airport are great!
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Here's my post from a while ago. Don't know if either are still in business but give them a try and both were great and local.

Photo,
I live in Richmond, VA and get all my lumber from Northland Forest Products in Troy (Just East of Charlottesville). They are a commercial operation, but they still make inventory available to us retail folks. Lots of species to choose from. Good Luck.
