Hello all,
I am new to woodworking and live in a smaller town in the eastern panhandle of WV. I am having a hard time finding a hardwood supplier in my area. Beyond lowes and home depot there are not alot of wood suppliers around, atleast not that I know of. Is ther a web listing or a reasonably priced online option for buying wood. Any input would be greatly appeciated.
Thanks.

wood help
I noticed that you are a new member. One thing I would suggest is you complete your profile so folks know at least your aproximate location it might help narrow responses. The only wood I would buy from the big box stores is if I was building a deck or a house. I'll bet you will be able to get a better supplier (which would be any supplier). You don't mention if you have the tools to finish rough lumber so I'll make that assumption. Some suppliers will do that task for a fee usually a bit extra per bf. I would suggest to places to go first. Go to http://www.woodfinder.com and http://www.woodweb.com . The first will give you solutions based on distance from your address. The second has a section on lumber exchange and it's a hodge podge of lumber sales that you can purchase. You don't mention what lumber species you want which will also determine where you can get it. I'll bet you can find saw mills in your area for a lot of stuff. If neither of those work you can look to buy off the internet. You will have to eat cost of shipping but there are reputable online suppliers. Maybee get some of your friends to go intogether to get a discount on a larger quantity. Anyway good luck and welcome to the forum!
I'm in Minnesota and contacted our Department of Natural Resources. They gave me a list of sawmill operators in the state.
You may want to contact some of the companies that sell portable sawmills (Timberking. Woodmizer) to get a list of owners in your area.
Look at Craig's list also.

hardwood supplier
If you are any where near Martinsburg, I suggest Hicksville Planing Mill in Clear Spring, MD, It is located a little west of Hagerstown, MD. They have a wide selection, good quality and good prices.
Again , depending on location Hardwoods Inc in Frederick.Md also has a wide selection. They have a web site that is useful to see what is available and the price.
If you want to travel further consider Exotic Lumber in Gaithersburg, MD. You can check their website for slection and prices.
I hope that helps.
I have access to local suppliers, but have ordered on-line or by phone from these suppliers - Hearne Hardwoods, Groff & Groff (PA) and Steve Wall Lumber (NC) and been pleased. Especially if you have a special need. Better wood and delivery costs not unreasonable, especially if you get the bundles sized for UPS shipment.
