Hi Folks,
I need to hang a small drawer beneath the writing surface of a writing arm windsor I am completing. The drawer will be about 6 x 10 x 3 deep.
I am having trouble visuallizing how to hang it from the underside, and I dont want to use hardware slides etc.. There is a strip 1″ x 2″ by 16 underneath the top that supports it. The only thing I can think of is to screw another strip parallel to it 6″ away and drop down side boards from the two strips and add a bottom to create a box. We have a couple of old sewing machine cabinets that have hanging drawers similar to what I want. Does anyone have a better idea?
thanks,
Stevo

Greene and Greene designed and built furniture with hanging drawers. Ebony strips with brass wood screws. Beautiful furniture! There are articles and designs available in some of the woodworking magazines on such. I will try and find some and post the references. Good luck!
steveo,
Most commonly, the drawer is hung from a pair of runners, "L" shaped in cross section, that engage grooves cut on the outside of the drawer's sides, near their top edges. Runners are screwed/nailed to the underside of the writing surface.

This drawer is hanging under the top. Not a great pic but if you look closely, you can see a L-shaped ledger under the table in which a lip on the drawer rides in.
