Hi there. I’m a relatively new wood worker. I am making a primitive-style walnut picture frame and am having an issue with glue. I fashioned a wood block for the back of the frame to server as a hanger. I glued the block to the back of the frame using Titebond II. I did not use screws… but relied on clamping for a day to allow the glue to set.
Then, I placed the frame on nail in my garage to show may wife and get her feedback (who does not like primitive style). Within a day, the glue joint failed. It appears as the block pulled some of the wood from the back of the frame… puzzling since the frame is not that large. I’ve attached a photo.
Does someone have an idea of what went wrong?
Thanks in advance…
Mark

wife . . . feedback (who does not like primitive style)

No doubt you will find some indentations too that perfectly reflect the face of your largest hammer or perhaps your spud bar.
I wouldn't worry about it. It is just your wife expressing her views on "primitive" style. She feels it important to keep communication lines open.
Seriously though . . .
by the looks of the direction of the fibers of the wood that are still stuck on the board in the photo you have made a cross grain glue up. Problem being that the block that fell off shrank across the grain (probably from heat in your shop if you are like many of us here) and the long board in the photo could not shrink in the same dimension but shrank some across ITs grain. So . . . there was too much movement in the joint during and after the curing of the glue.
Also it is critical with the type of glue you used to have a super good fit up, both boards very flat, so you couldn't slide a 2 thousandth (.002 inch ) feeler gauge between them. With epoxy or maybe contact cement you might have got away with a poorly fitting cross grain glue up.
Still, the cross grain boo boo is mostly what got you.
Try it again by planing off the old glue, run the block and the frame component grain in the same direction and most importantly . . . hang the frame in your shop but DO NOT show it to your wife.
