I posted this in Breaktime and they suggested I ask this question here:
I want to stain a bunch of pine 1x stock a dark colour for interior trim (windows etc) – like an old dark oak or dark mahogany. I have tried a variety of the minwax products, two coats with a 15min soak in time, plus used a pre-stain conditioner, but the colour doesn’t come out as dark as I would like. I did sand the wood with 80 and up to 180 grit. Any thoughts on how to get the colours darker? Thanks.

My experience has been that if you use a prestain with minwax stuff won't get very dark. I usually use a gel stain as a glaze over the minwax. Use a soft bristle brush and brush till you get the color you want. You'll probably have to try a few different colors depending on what you want. I like "Wood Finishers Supply" stains. http://woodfinisherssupply.com/nof-index.shtml
I put them on pine direct and they don't seem to blotch much.
Just my 2 cents
I think the best way to get pine to look good is to use glaze. Seal it entirely with shellac or lacquer, sand, then mix your color in a glaze and apply it. Brush the glaze with a soft brush to get to the clarity and color you want. It will take a while to dry (sometimes a day or two), then seal it with lacquer or varnish.
