Getting an antique black finish on Maple cabinet
I am having a brand new kitchen island built out of Maple and I would like to get that antique black finish. I’ve been looking at finished cabinets and furniture that is “painted” black, sanded off in areas and then has a lighter stain applied to the sanded spots. I would really like to get the same kind of look with a black stain so the wood is still visible (as opposed to using paint). Can you get a black stain dark enough? What would be the proper paint/stain/technique to use? Or should I just paint it?

Still see the wood
The best way to color your maple would be with a dye stain. Order a water based dye powder - you can mix it to the strenght you want and apply it with a sponge or rag.
