I need ideas for a vertical bar lock for a gun cabinet I am making. Door heighth is 52″ and will be 2 halves- each about 14″ wide and 3/4 ( or more if necessary ) thick. the one that I have seen in a catalog is good in heighth but the lock is not one that you would put on a gun cabinet. ( it is an antique ). I’m looking for one that can be opened quickly and is strong with a brass finish.

OK' so you will not be pleased with my post...
I was a little child one time.. MY mother had to send her guns to her father to keep me safe .
I gave up my guns when my first daughter arrived...... I think I made the correct choice.
thanks for the come-back-- this is for a customer--as long as I get paid for it ---I realy don't care what he does with itmaking sawdust
I can think of on one side (of the two) with push down latches mortised into the top & bottom to secure the one piece and act a base for the other side to lock to. Now for the second half I would either (depending on door thickness) put a single antique lock in (to add to the beautiful nature of the piece) and have it secure to the other door in a single spot, or a dual bar mechanism similar to how your garage door locks that would secure the top and the bottom of the door something you could fabricate. Obviously a wood cabinet is not designed to truly act as a secure theft protection device. The only way to truly secure is with a steel gun safe bolted to the wall. But if I had my choice the left door with push hasps top & bottom and a nice antique half mortised lock on the right. To add to the ambiance go get some real reclaimed lock sets for the piece and matching hinges. It would look sharp. good luck.

hi bones-- interesting -- I have some brass spring switches that work on a PRESSING in action-- when I get back in the shop --- I 'm going to look at them -- I made a knife and pistal cabinet that has a secret system that would puzzle the best of them if you are into these things --I send a photo to you--- vernmaking sawdust
That would be great, I'd love to see it.Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
If you can wait until November 5th, there won't be any more guns allowed here in the states, and there won't be any need for a gun safe.
Just trying to help.

Definately post a pic. Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
How antique, and in what style?
Barring finding a commercially-made solution, would it be feasible to have something purpose-made? Working from the basic idea of the vertical latching bars being moved in opposite directions off of an eccentric (a bar or plate to which the bars are attached at the 180° points), I was thinking about the eccentric being activated by curved hasps (projecting through curved slots in the door face) that would come together at the door opening for an antique padlock.
Ralph == you hit the nail on the head ==now I have to find a brass finished handle thanks vernmaking sawdust
