This may seem obvious to more experienced users, however, I’ve never used a mortiser before and the instruction manual is a little vague regarding setting the height of the motor and head.
I assume you need to loosen the set-screws and nuts on the right side of the mortiser’s head on the General model to set the height. Question is how tight do you put the set screws in order to hold the head at the right height, but still allow the handle to move mortiser head down easily. Again, probably obvious but I don’t want to screw up a brand new machine. Thanks for your time and help, as always its appreciated.

I don't have the General but the Powermatic 701. I have the set screws set so the head stays in position you leave it, need just a little bit of extra force to move it (not alot). You don't want it too tight as the chisel will drag some comming out of the wood.
Since using the mortiser is a slow paced movement. I would think it would take a very long time for wear to show up in the sliding dovetails. I think there is more concern wearing your arm out than the dovetails if you have it too tight. :-)
Thank you Ben, I suspected as much. I have adjusted the head as you suggested and it seems to work well. Appreciate the response. Thanks.
