I built two gates, a single and a double gate. I would like to try my hand at making a wooden gate latch for both gates. Are there some reference books where I can see different types of wooden gate latches? I am having a difficult time trying to find different designs of latches.

Bruce,
I've got nothing in my books that shows a good latch design. The most common design is a short bar attached to the gate, that pivots up and down and engages a notched block attached to the gate post. If you look at a typical metal gate latch in a hardware store you'll get the idea.
Double gates are always a problem, since neither side of the latch is attached to a fixed post. The usual solution is to put a vertical bar on one gate that can be pushed down into a pipe or plate flush with the ground but they are easily jammed by dirt in the ground mounted part and they are easily bent or broken. Once one side is fixed solidly then an ordinary latch that would work on a single gate will work to join the two.
