Steve is NOT history. He is though, on the History Channel
A new series devoted to restoring fine old buildings dating from colonial times is presently on THC
He has put on a few pounds, but he is unmistakingly good old Steve.
I missed the first half hour of the Premeire show tonight, but it will repeat later
this evening
(11 pm in Connecticut 3/9/04) Steinmetz.

Any idea why he "left" TOH? Seems he just disappeared from the program. We all know that Bob Vila left because he could not control his underarm perpsiration problem, but I am not aware that Steve had a similar problem.
My wife remembers reading that he chose to leave TOH to pursue other projects. With this new show, perhaps it's true.

"he chose to leave TOH to pursue other projects" is a euphemisn for being fired.
TOH thought they needed to change their hosts image to meet a younger target audience - and we got this fool Kevin, yeccch._________________________________

your comments are always so positive and uplifting. thanks for sharing...-Jazzdogg-
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
Michael,
I have to agree with you about the euphemism although it is also used prior to firing when management suggests that one's resume would look much better if one left to persue other projects.
I also find the new host to be somewhat off-putting, to the point that I no longer care to watch the show.
I don't watch the show either, for the reason you stated.
Steve Thomas was an affable guy with just enough building knowledge to be be believable for most people contemplating a remodel.
Kevin, on the other hand is not believable and has no knowledge of general construction. He was picked from an "Ask this Old House' episode where he was a total dunce.
Kevin = Steve - no way.

i belive this old house best year's are behind them, and have dumbed down with inane humor, and situation's. and have more and more the cover sheet for there magazine. they've had 25 years of precedence behind them , and the subject matter and more importantly the effort that it takes to stay on top in the D.I.Y. world is getting pretty thin... although david marks has opened up a nice niche for himself, and enjoy that that alot... best regards.....bear"expectations are premeditated resentments"
The upcoming season will be David Marks' last season. It's already in the can and he is not making anymore.
They pay him next to nothing for the shows._________________________________

thats a big disappointment... but i'm not surprised that guy can write his ticket whatever he does or wherever he is. there was sooo much potential there for an intermediate /advanced skills(the viewers). well i'll soak up what i can thanks for the F Y I ..... regards ...bear"expectations are premeditated resentments"

Hey guys,
This new kid Kevin, he's actually got a day job and TOH is not it! He really ought to stick with that day job! I think he's really way out of it here. Hopefully he won't last long, especially if the ratings and emails are in negative territory. Even my mother doesn't like this kid! And she's a fan of the show!
Those daring young men in their flying machines!

I'd heard it was a conflict re: endorsement deals (with Sears?), i.e. MONEY.-Jazzdogg-

HA HA Fingrs...that's funny
I was surprised to see the new guy Kevin on TOH a few days ago. I saw TOH today and Norm and new guy Kevin were on a yatch heading to the Bahamas. They are going to renovate some 200 year old Georgian on the island.
I just kept thinking how the career of a carpenter/craftsman could take him sailing to an island in the Tropics....I can dream...

That's too funny. Steve Thomas, as I understand it, is an accomplished ocean (sail) racer. He got to show Naahm how to sail the dinghy he built on NYW a while back, but Kevin gets to go sailing to the Bahamas on a blue-water sailing yacht, the one area where Steve really would know more than anyone else on the show. Life's a beach!Be seeing you...
Did the show you saw had them going to Bermuda to renovate a 200 year old house in st George, the company i work for supplied the cabinets and i did the install. It was neat seeing what goes on behind the cameras. Norm is very easy to talk to, Kevin is alright too. I`m am used to having home owners watching me work, try it with norm beside you.

Hey that's so cool. Yeah, that's the show. I'd bet Norm would be mellow, he always comes across that way on the shows.
I wish they'd keep the show the way it was. It seems they are trying to appeal to a wider audience with the banter and hokey humor. I did like Steve the best, too.
I believe the selection of Kevin was made in an effort to find a foil for the show that would act like the average home owner; not knowing much about how to do the various tasks in building / renovating / maintaining a home of any age. The expertise of everyone else on the show is very high, obviously, and he adds that sense of wonder that many of the viewers at home have. It makes those who haven't yet tried a reno believe that, maybe, they too can do it.
I, for one, find the chemistry between all the members of the show to be excellent. Although I miss Steve, I think Kevin adds another new angle to the show that will continue to attract viewers. Some will leave over it, too. There was a faction that was sad when Vila left and was replaced by Steve. I thought Steve was terrific but as the host, he seemed to have lost some of his fire. Who can blame him after ten years when 5 years in TV is considered forever!
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Kell
That was a great show! Very interesting how they determined the original layout of those old homes based on the positioning and shape of the old nail holes.
FYI:
Found this interview of Steve Thomas not long after he left the show. Sounds like he may have left on his terms:

What was the name of the show you saw him on? I checked the History Channel's web site and couldn't come up with anything.

Steve Thomas Rooney has never left the business
Apart from being a famous TV personality, and an acomplished author, Steve Thomas Rooney is also the spokesperson and ambasodor for Habitat for Humanity International, mostly focused on Women Build, Builders Blitz, and ReStore. Having a decent housing is one of the most basic human rights, and fortunately people like Steve Thomas Rooney are still willing to open their hearts and give their best to help peoplemake their wishes come true.
