I live in Smithfield NC, about 25 miles southeast of Raleigh. Until earlier this year, I was able to get really high quality wood, at really fair prices, from Roger at East Wake Hardwoods in Zebulon.
We all miss Roger, whose battle is over.
So now the question becomes, where do I get good quality wood, in reasonable quantities? Certainly I’ve looked at Klingspor’s on Capital, and at Woodcraft, just off of Glenwood.
But there must be somewhere within an hour or so drive, that could fill the void left when Roger closed up his place.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Look on the ncwoodworker site and you'll see a list of vendors/wood suppliers.

in Gibsonville, and nice folks.

NC hardwoodstore in Gibsonville. Hilton Peale.
If you don't mind the travel, maybe Steve Wall Lumber in Mayodan.
Are you willing to air dry sawmill stock? Most of the sawyers I know in the local area push walnut and soft maple logs in a pile. They sell entire logs only.
Sometimes you have to lay out 500 but its an option if you have time and space. I don't use walnut that isn't air dried for a couple reasons: the dealers don't have any wide boards and the wood does not plane like the air dried stock.
Dan in Durham.
This is a big disappointment for me.I live within 25 miles of a fairly major market -- Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill. And the best suggestions for hardwood suppliers all include a two hour drive.Oh well............

I just looked in ncwoodworker and there's one in Four Oaks.
>>"I just looked in ncwoodworker and there's one in Four Oaks."I tried looking at NCWddoworker.org, both previously, and just this morning. What I learned is that the format of the "links" makes it quite difficult to actually learn the location of most of the vendors. As a result, I still have no idea which link on that site is the one you mention -- in Four Oaks.Got a direct link?

It's .net
http://www.ncwoodworker.net/?Drop down the Woodworking in NC heading. Click Wood suppliers. You're in Region #3, I think. Sign up and you can post a request to buy/trade with nearby members.
Thanks for the help -- I had been following their "Links" page, and wandering around under the "Wood Suppliers" heading on that page. Each link showed almost no information about the vendor -- hence my follow up question.I was already aware of that supplier in Four Oaks. His biggest selling lumber is probably pressure treated pine. Second to that is spruce -- construction stuff. Although he has a small business in cypress and some oak, I'm looking for a much broader inventory.Oak, maple, walnut, cherry, mahogany, hickory, pecan, figured 'specialty' woods, and I also have been known to use some exotics. But thanks for the help. I appreciate the time you took.

Gibsonville is way worth the trip. They have a tremendous supply of native and exotic hardwoods, you can pick through the pile (not so at Steve Wall if I remembe correctly), and if you are a membe of Triangle Woodworkers, yoiu can get a small discount of bf pricing. I do not go there often, but probably once a month and buywhat I need then.
