When the point a new telescope to the stars for the first time
they call it “first light”
I decided to see what all this “plane talk” was about and came up dry
at the library.. So I decided to buy a #4 Grolz and noodle it it. It was on sale for $29 or so at Woodcraft and I am a glutton for punishment.
I flattened the sole and sides up to 300 grit. also cleaned up the
chip breaker and the cap and the frog up to about 180 or so.
And lapped the blade for 2 days trying to get it to resemble something like the pictures posted here. Then I tried bevel grind it freehand.
Then I drove to Woodcraft and got a Veratis (sp?) Bevel jig and a MKII
honing jig (figuring if I cant get the angle decent freehanding it on a grinder it was going to be impossible to do it otherwise.
So it was ground and honed on a 4/8000 waterstone
And then the figuring out started..
I assume that the “frog” slides back to give clearance so that the
blade can be flush to the sole. With that in mind is adjusted it
until I could not feel the blade anymore and tightened it down
I think put it on a granite slab and adjusted the blade to get it
to just appear.
And this happened!

What kind of shavings cream did you use? Perhaps more importantly, how does your wife feel about you taking curly pictures? ;-)
Feels good, eh?
Rich,
Uh oh, you're now about to get in really serious trouble. If you can make fluffies like that with a $29 plane...............
That slippery slope's gonna gitcha,

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Welcome to the dark side.
Next you'll be prowling flea markets for planes and instead of spendign a hour digging out a cord and power tool you'll reach for your plane and all the guys will be in shock as fine tune that project.
Your Hooked! And the addiction gets worse ;-) But the results will only get better.

A little off topic, but I have to ask. Is that a Steel City granite top tablesaw I see under that plane? If so, how are you liking it?
Yes I love it! Its about a month old... I read that another person here had a "horror story" with is.. Blade Run out... My miter slots are perfect.. the fence was easy to tweak the blade is
aligned to the slots without having to touch anything major I had to tweak the pointer on the Saw Tilt miter it was off a degree and bugged me.The 50" was huge in my part of the Garage. So I got the smaller 30" 3HP one 220 etc.and it came with a Forrest WWII and a cleaner for removing Sap and such.I will tell you that it was alotta fun to unpack! (read not!) but me
and my Son rocked and stacked up wood to get it out of the packing steel crate it comes it.. IF ya get one delivered on a pallet have the person get it REALLY close to where ya want it...I had this issue.. the Miter gauge.. the Set threaded knob was bent
and the threads were torn up. I called customer service. I was ready to send um pictures and such to show them it was messed up and they were like taking my address and such and my cell phone died about 2-3rd thru the call.. I was like crud *!&#% cause it was now technically after hours.. and made a note to try again. I called them the next day and CS said . .we called the local WC store and It will be there tomorrow. I was thinking Id get parts and such but they sent me a whole new Gauge. I called because there was not return information for the other one and he said.. Give it to ya garbage man.I cannot imagine that one guy getting TWO lemons? I am wondering how he is measuring the run out.. anyway I bought it becasue I was trying to make drawers for a assembly table and they were essentially not square on any corner, My Old TS was a Ryobi and while it was fun there is no way to make a JIG for it.. so I blew all my Attaboys and had the OYMO (One ya must obey) give me a wink to get it for my birthday/christmas present...IF ya near Tampa/Sarasota Fl come over and check it out.. It rocks.. RichCapt. Rich Clark

Wax your sole and it gets even better! Congrats on your accomplishment and thanks for sharing. I think many 'woodworkers' go their whole life without that experience because they don't have the patience or the open-mindedness that you do. Now the work begins!Brian
Intoxicating, isn't it!
Welcome. There's a secret handshake, but we can't show it to you until that skin grows back where you rubbed it off lapping and honing that blade :-)

Rich,
Dude. And I never hardly use that term saving it for special occasions. Like this one.
I haven't even finished reading your post but had to write. But can relate to the lapping for two days comment ! The old Lie-Neilson blades were about that bad as well. They are MUCH, much, much better now. Thank you LN !
Dude. You are in the wrong chat room. You are a metal worker. Just go with it. First this hand plane success. Good job ! Then some knives . . . pretty soon you are going to be reading Richard Finch books and making your own air planes.
roc
a fellow metal man who moon lights as a wood worker . . . sort of.
