hi guy’s,
i am making my own kitchen cabinets and would like some advice. i want to use 3/4″ plywood for the carcasse and MDF for the face frames ( if used ), and the doors. i would like your advice on what i can apply to the carcasse to make it easier to clean. and secondly. i intend to paint the MDF face-frames and doors, but have heard that the edges can be harder to finish than the face of the board. this will look terrible. can anyone give me some advice?
thanks and good luck!!

MDF is used extensively in Oz for casings and baseboards.
When the primer has dried all the machined surfaces are fuzzy and have to be rubbed down but once that is done and the following coats applied there is no difference in the finished appearance.

Might want to search archives on MDF - lots of previous discussion. Best interior I think is melamine. Almost impossible to scratch, stays bright white. Search on melamine for LOTS of previous discussion.
Latex paint will over time absorb dirt and oil from finger tips. Tinted water borne finish a better choice I think. http://www.homesteadfinishing.com for range of colors of tinted wb finish.
By all means, make ONE and use it for a few months before committing to a roomful of cabinets.
in a kitchen id use the water resistant MDF, canfibre has been mentioned here before. IM sure a google.com search would turn up canfibre MDF
I used three coats of sanding sealer then two coats of polyurethane on plywood cases. So far everything has cleaned up great. Built master bedroom closet cabinets, 9x12 floor to ceiling all the way around with MDF. Very heavy, flat and stable but a paint sponge. Started to look good after three coats and do not notice any difference between edges and face.
Best thing we did when planning our kitchen? The only doors are in the sink base and corner carousel, everything else in the bases are draws. 12" deep for the pots which are now so easy to find, no more bending over for us. Think about it, if you use draws you don't have to be concerned with cleaning cabinet frames.
