Hello Everyone,
I have a problem. I am finishing a piece of crotch mahogany for the top of a Bible box. I planed the piece down and routed the edges. Then I sanded with 150 grit down to 220 grit using a random orbital sander. I then put boiled linseed oil on the wood and wet sanded with 400 grit. The top looked fine for several days. I went away for the weekend and now there is a distinctive line across the top. I have attached a photo. What did this come from and what is the best way to fix it?
Thanks a lot,

That looks very much like what happens when the wood gets uneven sun or air exposure. How wide is the discolored strip? It's conceivable that it's from long-term contact with a sticker, but the strip looks too wide for that.
I would expose the wood to bright sunlight for a few days. You may be able to do that from indoors, with the wood placed next to a window, but be aware that some modern types of window glass are UV-inhibiting, which would defeat the purpose.
If that doesn't seem to help, I think the only other option is to sand the surface thoroughly, to get below the affected wood, and then refinish. After sanding, wiping with alcohol or mineral spirits should reveal any remaining discoloration, so you'll know whether or not you've sanded far enough.

Steve,Thanks for the suggestion. The discolored strip is about 4in. wide so I agree, I don't think it is from a sticker.Tim
Looks like window banding, not stickers. It would appear that it was being UV irradiated from some source (sun or high intensity un-UV protected lamp) that was partially blocked. Like a window with heavy frame or a piece of something semi opaque (like a strip of cloth) either laying across it or interrupting the UV during it's brightest exposure. Or one or two hundred electronic flash bursts. or...Just a two martini thought.Old coot

SNIPE SNIPE SNIPE
Its planer snipe.
Look more closely. It's a band about 4" wide, 4" in from the end. I don't think there are any planers that would put a snipe there.

Looks like snipe.
Ok, I agree, it's snipe. It sanded out just fine after I took the six inch Bosch to it.Thanks for the input, guys.Tim
Snipe is one of the most frustrating things. It's been discussed here much I think, and some say they can "tune" it out of the machine. I've never been able to do that. I've just gotten in the habit of figuring I'm gonna lose about 3" on each end of a board.
