I bought some interesting planks of spalted box elder over Xmas at Groff & Groff lumber in PA. An employee I talked with there said they have one customer who buys tons of spalted box elder, and finishes it in such a way that not only are the reds and pinks retained, but that the background takes on a striking whitish contrast. Of course, he also said the guy won’t tell anybody how he finishes the stuff.
Any knowledge out there on finishing to retain the reds of box elder? Not much is on the forums here, and I had always heard that the color inevitably fades and turns brown.
Thanks.

Thanks for suggestion Don. I posted on Jeff Jewitts site, but no responses yet.
Not too long ago (12-18 months?) FWW had an article on boxelder, and mentioned different finishing techniques. If I recall, they came to the same conclusion you did - when exposed to light, the red eventually fades.

Hi Thew,
I vaguely remember that FWW did publish a short description of Box Elder, but I'll be darned if I can find it.
Anybody know the reference?
Thanks in advance to anyone that does.
