Finish recommendations for hand rails

I would appreciate recommendations on what to use to finish a new oak hand rail. Is a wipe on oil finish okay? Or would one recommend a varnish.

I'd go with a varnish Craig. Much better wear in the long run. A wipe on varnish like Waterlox or Arm-R-Seal would be my choice.
