Finish on the soul of a wooden plane
Hi
I recently aquired a couple planes from my boss – did 5 hours of work for him and got an old (maybe 100 yr old) 14″ bench plan, 3″ wide, metal soul, and a 23 1/2″ ECE one piece wooden jointer – I’ve just finished tuning up the wooden jointer and was wondering about finishing the soul as I have to flatten it out.

Wax.
Wax. The sole is probably Lignum Vitae which is oily as is. If for some reason the wood looks a bit dried out used a little boiled linseed oil, buff it thoroughly, wait a week, and then wax the sole.
