Greetings:
I had some problem with tearout while smooth palning a small mahagany table top. I am now trying to deal with that and using a hand scraper . aseems to eb coming out. The table is for my daughter and she wants a lighter stain than a “traditional” dark mahogany. Can I use 1 coat of BLO and then some clear lighte roil base stain? Will BLO help with mahogany. I use BLO often as I woirk alot with curly maple. Will BLO add anything ot this really?
With the porous nature of mahogany and not using it much I also have a question on surface preparation. Should I go down to 220 grit or stop at 180 grit? I also hear I may need to fill the porse with rottenstone?
Thank you for yoru time in answering this.

You can add BLO to mahogany as part of your finish schedule. It will deepen the wood a degree, depending on the type and grain.
An easy way to preview what it will look like is to wipe the wood down with mineral spirits. It will be pretty close to what the BLO will do. Also use some scraps to experiment on.
Personally I usually stop at 180 grit. That is just a matter of personal preference.
As far as filling the pores I don't suggest you use rottenstone, use a paste filler designed for this.
Also do yourself a major favor; get one of the many finishing books out there and read up on paste filling and then practice it on scraps prior to trying it out on your project.
If you plan on doing just an oil finish, which will be close to the grain and not a surface coat, you can skip the filler if you wish. However if you plan on doing a full finish say with a varnish, I would consider filling essential in that case.
Take the time to read and make samples.

Thank you very much for your time and advice!!!
I did see an article (FWW) where you still play hockey! cool I am a Michigan State grad & hockey is in my blood!!
Dubie,
In your blood eh? Do you skate?
I always like watching the Spartans play, especially when someone like B.C. beats them!! GO HOCKEY EAST.
We have Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays(my slot) at Yale from 1 to 2:15 in the afternoon. You'd be surprised at the turnout; state police, firefighters, doctors, attorney's, self employed (like me) We have some pretty rousing games. Hell, where else can you smack doctors and attorneys around for over an hour?
Yale has an alumni hockey game every year in February. They were short a goaltender this year, so I got to play. What a fast game that was! Somehow I came out on the winning side. That's always fun.
Take care.
