I was planning on using a finish recommended in a past fine woodworking mag. that consists of 1/3 tung oil, 1/3 turpentine, and 1/3 varnish to finish a oak fireplace surround for my natural gas fireplace. It will be about 4″ away on the sides and 6″ above the vent. Someone I know told me I should be concerned having it that close to the heat from the fireplace. He made me a little nervous and I wondering if I should use something else. Should I be concerned? If so what else should I use to be safe?

dgasior,
Frankly, I wouldn't worry too much about it, once cured you should be fine. To further ease your mind check with the local building authority and/or the fire department. FWIW.
