I need an inexpensive way to put a finish on a new ceiling of 1 by 6 knotty pine. It would also be nice if it also imparted some slight warmth in the color. would some combination of boiled linseed oil be good ?

Mark,
BLO will work, as will pure tung oil or "tung oil finish" (tung oil and varnish mixture -- Formbys, for example). They will all give something of a warm orange color to the wood. My preference is for the color tung oil gives. After exposure to sun light for a couple of months, pine deepens to a really nice slightly orangish tan color.
I believe that some types of shellac will also give a warm orange color to the wood, but I may be mis-remembering something I read a while ago. (I have no experience with shellac.)
Hope this helps.
James
