I have just removed a lacquer/maple finish from a solid birch dining table. What type of finish would you recommend, I am completely open regarding color? The table is early American in style and has turned legs, drop leaf, circular with 3 expanding leaves. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Shellac's the easiest and fastest. Fine antiques are done in shellac. It's safe, you've been eating shellac for years on candy and pills.
Thank you for your reply Frenchy, shellac was my preferred finish also but it is very difficult to find shellac flakes or even premixed shellac here in Ireland. I did discover that Ace hardware will ship internationally and they carry the Zinsser range, this may be the answer. Thanks again. Jim
Just my guess, but if you use the Yellow Pages to find someone who does piano refinishing, he will know of a source for shellac. (I've got many years experience figuring out how to find "unavailable" stuff.)David Ring
